We can understand how many people were thinking about Jesus, because people still think about him the the same way today. If he can do such astounding miracles for us, who cares what he is saying? He can say whatever he likes, as long as we are the beneficiaries of his miraculous power. Yet the person who only wants the miracles, and shows no regard for his words, ends up losing everything, because Jesus' words show people how to have him personally forever. Jesus' concern is for eternity, not merely for now. A command to love your enemies may not appeal to someone who just wants miracles. But without this loving principle inside of you. you may not even be a Christian. The same thing can be said regarding a number of other awkward commands Jesus makes in this text. To live like this is to live radically. It is to value the honour of Christ than my own perceived rights. It is to love people more than my stuff. It is to be a Christian rather than a person who is merely greedy for a miracle for personal relief now. Jesus wants you to have him, the miracle-worker, forever.
