Samuel came into prominence at a time when God's worship was despised. The priests (Eli's sons) were robbing God of his share of the fellowship offering, and robbing the worshippers of what was theirs. They showed utter contempt for God, his people and his worship. Eli rebuked them but chose not to depose them from office. When God acted it was to restore his worship to what it should have been. He rebuked Eli for despising the privileges he had given to Aaron and his descendants. He warned that his sons would no longer be priests but that a new, 'faithful' priest would take over. It was not Samuel, though he is prominent. He was a teacher and judge, as if God was taking his people back to first principles before the ritual of religion could be meaningful to them again. We see Christ's shadow appearing. Like Samuel he was an insignificant child (though God was with both). Like Samuel he was given by God's power in answer to prayer. As High Priest Christ offered to God on our behalf; he intercedes for us, and he shares our fellowship with God that results from his atoning blood. He is also the 'faithful over God's house' (Hebrews 3:6) as Eli could never have been. Why did God act as he did? Because he values his relationship with his people - and that relationship was jeopardised by the sin of the priests. When people came to worship the unspoken message the priests gave was that God is not worthy of our devotion (does that not happen in parts of Christ's church today?). Jesus' parables join the prophets in showing God seeking the lost of his people to bring them back. Therefore we ought to beware of godless religion and the world's influence, and be thankful for Christ.
