The Bible is full of stories where God uses ordinary people doing ordinary things to accomplish extraordinary divine purposes. Hannah was one of God's covenant people, but she lived at a time when the nation generally had turned its back on him. While she had a legitimate longing for a child they had a perverse longing for a king - God granted both requests but their attitudes (and the results) were very different. Hannah is an example of human grief - a God-given desire denied. That is is the occasion for Satan to harass the saints, and Hannah was oppressed by her proud rival. The best of human help was inadequate and the only outlet such grief can have is prayer to God. At the Place of Meeting she cried to the God who had disappointed her - 'Why?' Her attitude showed confidence in him (when others might have despaired) and love for him (when others might have rejected him). She was misunderstood by another of God's people - how common! - but they show how to remedy such things. God answered her prayer in the ordinary course of life. She responded by giving her child back to God as she had promised. Samuel worshipped with her even though he did not yet know the Lord - how important worship routines are for our children. The outcome was wonderful - rescue for God's people - and it would not have come without her pain. This reminds us of a biblical theme - God raises the dead. It is vividly illustrated in the lives of Sarah, Elizabeth, and Mary. These were all leading up to the virgin birth. The church also prays in helplessness (but see Isaiah 54:1-3); and God answers as he answered Hannah. Another theme is fellowship with God in giving and receiving.
