The Apostle Paul urges upon Titus the importance of sound doctrine concerning how we are to live. He explains in the clearest terms the importance that the older brethren should live soberly, be reverent, solid in their faith, showing love, and being patient.
In this study we are encouraged not to lose our distinctiveness as Christians, and to continue to believe the doctrines of the Bible, for the health of the church.
Sin, we are told, can still affect us in old age, but dignity and Christian maturity should mark our years. We should seek to be sound in faith and in judgement, not censorious, or given to over-reacting to situations that arise. Another lesson is not to be harsh, or lacking in love.
Paul gives direct advice to Titus on how men and women should behave. We should be God honouring, not gossips or slanderous, not divisive, or unnecessarily critical. The older should be good examples to the young, and be teachers of good things.
The apostle's advice on family life is also direct and practical. The young should be chaste in behaviour and in mind. Marriage, as a covenenant commitment should be believed and encouraged. Husbands and wives should love each other, and children should know the love of their parents.
May God help us so to live for His honour and glory. |
