At this point in the spiritual progression of the beatitudes our gaze begins to shift. We began by looking in and discovering that we were poor in spirit and that we were sinners. This gave us occasion to mourn. Then we began to look up - in humble submission and surrender to Christ. This is the meaning of being meek. We also looked up in our dependence on God's mercy for God to provide for us in His grace the righteousness that we lacked. This righteousness, imputed to us transformed us and made us willing to forgive even as we've been forgiven. Still our gaze was up - striving, now, to behold Christ with the eye of faith even as we strive to be pure. Now in the 7th beatitude our gaze shifts again we begin to look out. Our desire is to serve and in our study of this beatitude we learn how the ministry of the peacemaker is to be exercised.
