This is a sermon about how the transforming grace of God within the Christian community, a small community at that, had a disproportionately large effect on the Roman Empire and beyond. Ponder well the first verse of Philemon: "Paul a prisoner of Christ Jesus..." Christ himself had, as it were, put the cuffs and chains on Paul and placed him there--not as a punishment or any such thing, but in providence working all things after the counsel of his own will. Was Paul really at the mercy of Rome? No. Was Joseph really at the mercy of his brothers, or Potipher? No. Was David really at the mercy of Saul? No. Are you really at the mercy of your present circumstances??? In this letter, the only letter of Paul's that we have written to a private citizen, Paul is asking for his friend to act graciously. This is very simple, nothing here is hard to understand. We need to grow in grace because "unoccupied territory lapses." "We hold our spiritual gifts on the terms of using them." So be strong in grace, not lazy in grace. The long range of good deeds is remarkable.
