1 Samuel chapter 13 shows the beginning of Saul's descent into the abyss of sin.
Chapter 7 show the four places of Samuel's circuit riding that parallel the chapters covering Saul's life: Bethel--the house of God; Gilgal--flesh conquered; Mizpeh--fighting, gaining victory for the Lord; Ramah--the homefront where he built an altar there.
Saul is selected: in chapter 9 at Ramah In chapter 10 in Mizpeh In chapter 11 in Gilgal, but never anointed in Bethel.
Saul began running ahead of God and getting in the flesh. He decides to do it his own way by usurping the duties of the priest. It cost Saul the crown and the kingdom and will eventually cost him his life, along with the crown, kingdom and life of his son, Jonathan.
As soon as Saul decides to disobey the Law and usurp the duties of the priest, Samuel shows up as promised. Samuel tells Saul that the Lord will not establish his kingdom but will give it to a man after his own heart.
