In chapter 40 we had the privilege to “Behold Our God,” as Isaiah gave a vivid description of the majesty and glory of God. In chapter 41, we saw that “Our God Reigns,” with Isaiah's description of the absolute sovereignty of God. It is because of God's sovereignty and power that the believer can have confidence that He will fulfill all His purposes. In the final section of chapter 41 Isaiah presents to us the futility of idolatry. In a mock trial God challenges the “gods” and “idols” to present their case. He calls upon them to demonstrate their deity, power, and sovereignty by predicting the future and explaining the past. But they are unable to do so, and prove the point that they are feeble. The Lord then declares the truth about Himself, proving that He is vastly superior. I present the same truth from the Scriptures and the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith. God then makes a concluding statement by issuing the final verdict on the matter. In my conclusion to the sermon I address both unbeliever and believer, driving home the point that the true God must be known in truth, and then honored with thoughts that are worthy of Him.
