In Malachi 3:13-18, two harsh words are denounced. The first harsh word, "It is vain to serve God", is really pagan mentality using God only for material gain as illustrated in Jer 44:16-18. The second harsh word is "Now we call the proud blessed". The proud are blessed only materially, and that only by common grace. It is impossible for God to bless the proud because He hates pride. Sources of pride are illustrated.
True blessing comes only to the humble. Those who humbled themselves to Malachi's message are blessed in the final verses of chapter 3. They are jewels to Divine Majesty because in them He sees the righteousness of His own Son.
