When unbelievers come into the church under the guise of being believers, their influence can be very detrimental to the health and growth of the church. Their unbiblical beliefs and practices can easily be accepted and allowed to shape those of believers. Characteristics of such people and the dangers they present are given in scripture to be taken seriously as warnings for believers to be on guard. The compromise, mixing, adjusting, and redefining of the truth of God's word soon diminishes its transforming power and leads people astray or leaves them lost. The changes are often subtle, disguised, and over a long enough time that the drift isn't realized until there is great danger and damage. The church today must be aware and beware of the tendency to drift way from the truth of God's word as it is increasingly at odds with the world the church is in.
