“The Saints Final Perseverance” OR “The Saints Final Preservation?”
I - Discriminating remarks
a) We believe the saints persevere and are preserved, but this is not to say that all of the ungodly who think themselves believers are preserved. b) Salvation cannot be lost, but the Bible is clear that many turn back c) We have already spoken about the dangers of a false evangelism based on “decisions” and not on faith and repentance. d) A true believer may fall from the truth temporarily. A true believer may fall into grievous sins, but he/she will die in faith. e) Sometimes true believers are removed by death f) The assurance of salvation of a backslidden person, can only be known to us by their repentance. g) Assurance of salvation and perseverance are not the same.
II - CASUISTRY & ASSURANCE
How can I have assurance of salvation? ~ Grudem suggests that we ask ourselves three questions
1. Am I today relying solely on Christ for my salvation? 2. Is there evidence of my having received the new heart of regeneration? 3. Do I see a pattern of growth in grace as a believer?
III – OBJECTIONS TO THIS DOCTRINE
1- Why the exhortations to persevere in faith, if it is all of God? 2- Some texts appear to contradict the preservation of the saints
Conclusion
GOD PRESERVES HIS OWN and… THOSE WHOM GOD OWNS MUST PERSEVERE
