The Gospel According To John July 1, 2012 Sermon Lesson 86 John 18:12-14, 19-24 The Attack of Annas and Caiaphas Upon Jesus: Five Reasons Why the Sanhedrin Wanted Jesus Dead
How much did the Sanhedrin want Jesus dead? Careful coordination of His arrest (12) Use of overwhelming force in the arrest (12) Long-term planning to bring all of this about (13-14) Requirement of the accused to witness against himself (19ff) Influencing of others to hate Jesus (22) Coordination with each other to reject the truth (23-24) Five Reasons Why the Sanhedrin Wanted Jesus Dead Fear: They feared the loss of their “place” and their “nation” (John 11:47-48) Pride: They feared loss of their religious authority (John 11:47-48) Errant theology: Wrongly accused Him of Sabbath-breaking & blasphemy (John 5:18) Envy: They envied His position as a religious leader of the Jews (John 12:19; Matt 27:17-18) Unbelief: They would not believe that He was the Messiah, the Son of God (John 10:24-31) The ultimate cause: Unregenerate hearts (John 3:2-7; 10:25-27; 1 John 5:1) The command: Believe the Gospel! (John 3:16) Applications: Are we living a life of religious externalism, having the form but not the function of Christianity? Is ours a genuine repentance and faith? Are we raising little Pharisees and Sadducees—children who will one day want Jesus dead? Are we dealing with hypocritical hearts now? Are you a member of the Sanhedrin, or are you a member of the Church?
