Cursing the Fruitless Fig Tree
Jesus has no use for fig tree without figs. Jesus owns the tree and He is interested only in fruit, not the other benefits the tree might provide. The lesson for us is that He is only interested in whether we are fruitful, not whether we make a great show of Christian profession or activity (fig leaves). We may excel at many things that this world highly esteems, but it will not matter. We will be cut down and thrown into the fire if we do not possess what Christ esteems. Israel was cut down in 70 AD and thrown into the fire. The church at Ephesus -- a church we would consider solid in our day -- had its candlestick removed in due time. The American church stands in the same danger. Unless we bear fruit, we are finished. Christ has no use for fruitless churches and fruitless "Christians."
