Great injustices had been perpetrated against Paul and Silas. They had only helped the city through preaching the gospel and delivering the woman of the spirit of divination. Instead they are falsely accused, unjustly punished and then wrongfully imprisoned. God's people often have to suffer much hardship and injustice which can leave them feeling weak and discouraged.
There are helps for the Lord's people. Firstly we need to remember that we are not promised ease. Secondly we need to make sure we are not consumed by a sense of injustice so as to become unbalanced. Next we need to be careful we do not take steps to right an injustice that would ally us unhelpfully with people who are angry or unreliable. Fourthly we should be encouraged that we are promised God's presence as we suffer injustices. Furthermore, as Paul does in this situation, we should not allow ourselves to be trampled upon but use powers under the law to see that the reputation of the church and the gospel is not tarnished. Finally, we should be encouraged as we remember that the Lord will one day right every wrong.
