I COME QUICKLY: The promise of the Lord's coming to the Philadelphia Church includes a blessed promise of deliverance. However, Christ's coming to the Sardis Church recorded earlier was included as a threat of judgment. Revelation 3:3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. The Philadelphia Church was told to keep doing what they were doing. They were commended for keeping God's word and not denying Jesus' name. They needed a simple reminder that all could be lost if they failed to remain true. TAKE THY CROWN: Notes from Revelation 2:10 expanded here. There are five crowns mentioned in the Bible. [1] Crown of Life (James 1:12; Revelation 2:10)—Those at Smyrna were to be faithful unto death so that they might receive a martyr's crown. [2] Crown of Glory (1 Peter 5:2, 4)—This is the elder's crown and is awarded to faithful elders by the Chief Shepherd when He shall appear. [3] Crown of Rejoicing (1 Thessalonians 2:19–20; Philippians 4:1)—Those at Philadelphia had already earned the Soulwinner's crown (Revelation 3:11). They were told to stay true so that they do not lose their reward. Believers cannot lose what God has done for them but can lose the rewards from what you have done for God. Second John indicates that a Christian can lose his rewards. If so, those rewards may refer to these crowns. 2 John 1:8 Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.
