These verses must be seen as an invitation for unbelievers as well as for His disciples. The unbeliever will find rest for his soul for the first time in his life. The believer, the disciple, will come to Him to renew that rest or find that rest again (from which he might have walked away). It is for the believer as well as for the unbeliever! I. Jesus Himself Invites You to Come to Him! Christ will personally give you rest. Rest for your souls. It is a promise. In Jeremiah 6:16, we read, "Thus says the LORD: "Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls. But they said, 'We will not walk in it.'" It is not by accident Jesus offers this. It was offered before by God to Israel but they would not accept it. Jesus is implying that coming to Him is in fact walking in the ancient paths, walking in the "good way" since all of the OT points to this Messiah. Jesus is offering the rest the Israelites forfeited, rejected, and scorned. II. Jesus Promises You Rest! The point is, we have run our own lives and sought to find peace with God our own way and we have grown weary. Christ's way is kind, light, easy and his burden is not heavy. It is EASY, it is LIGHT… it is not BURDENSOME (1 John 5:3 "… His commandments are not burdensome"). III. Jesus Calls You to Come, Take and Learn! ERGO 1. If you are believer and restless, then ask yourself… -Have you actually come to Christ or have you run away from Him? 2. If you are not a disciple of Christ, then… -Are you weary from toiling in life, heavy laden (sense your guilt, disappointed, overwhelmed with your failures and defiance against God?)
