In this passage and in v. 16, we learn something of Jesus' custom, his habit. Listen to how one commentator explained this phrase. "Jesus had been brought up at Nazareth and, being there again, he went to worship on the sabbath as his custom was. There are many references to Jesus' attendance at worship, but this is the only one that tells us that it was his habit." (Tyndale)
The custom/habit of our Lord (v. 16) 1. Jesus regularly attended public worship. From what we can gather, religion was at a low point. He no doubt heard preaching that was less than helpful; he no doubt had to set aside some of the errors he heard. Jesus witnessed the way they perverted worship in the Temple and drove out the money changers. He resisted the formality that plagued the nation of Israel. Calvin said the state of religion had degenerated! It was not a "pure" church and yet he attended regularly, faithfully, habitually on the Sabbath. And now he utilized the opportunity to teach. If anyone could have complained about attending Worship, Jesus did but he habitually went on the Sabbath. 2. Jesus knew Scripture. Though we can't be dogmatic, Jesus probably didn't have Scripture. Most didn't own Bibles and most couldn't read. A great majority of them learned Scripture during the public reading of Scripture. Jesus obviously could read and he probably learned Scripture from the public reading of it (and probably studied it on his own while in the synagogue). We know He was exposed to Scripture during public worship. 3. Jesus regularly prayed (Luke 5:15-16). Applications 1. BE HONEST. 2. BE BIBLICAL. 3. BE REALISTIC. 4. BE HUMBLY DEPENDENT UPON THE LORD. 5. BE GOSPEL CENTERED.
