There is quite a difference between a shepherd and a thief. A shepherd cares for his sheep, and will protect them with his life. A thief comes to kill, and steal, and destroy. A hireling will watch the sheep, but he will not protect them, because he does not care for them. He is only there for his own profit and he will flee when trouble comes to the sheep. Jesus is the good Shepherd, He is the Great Shepherd, the Shepherd of our souls, and the chief Shepherd. John chapter 10 is about the conflict Jesus had with the Jews over his sheep.
