In verse 7 John exhorts all who read this letter to love one another. Love is the distinguishing and pre-eminent grace of all the graces given to the Christian by the Holy Spirit. “Now abide faith, hope, and love, but the greatest of these is love.” (1st Corinthians 13: 13) Being able to see that we have love for other Christians and to be able to see love in the lives of others who say that they believe, is one of the ways that we can discern true from false Christianity. We know that our fallen sinful nature has been changed when we find ourselves able to love others with a Christ-like love. This is not something that comes from us naturally. It is something that we are enabled to do by the grace of Christ and the by the power of the Holy Spirit. So, this afternoon I want to examine briefly the Source of Love, the Absence of Love, and the Humble consideration of Love.
