Every church is God’s household. And just as is true in anyone’s household—the head of the house is responsible for how the house operates. God’s house, God’s rules. So, in this passage Paul is reminding Timothy—and the church—of some of those rules. He writes about how church members are to conduct themselves, remembering that they are members ultimately not just of that local church, but of God’s family. As such, God has the final say in how a church operates and how church members are to live. This includes how church members are to relate to one another. God expects the members of His household to serve and help each other as we fulfill our responsibilities as followers of Jesus in this world. As we do so we must remember that we are family. Because of Jesus Christ we have become part of God’s household. As members of His family we now share both family relationships and family responsibilities.
