In chapter 5 of 1 Timothy the Apostle Paul addresses some of his concerns regarding different groups in the Ephesian church. He starts off by telling Timothy how to relate to people of different ages and genders (1-2) and then specifically deals with widows in the church (3-16). In v. 17 he begins addressing the issue of church leaders. This was a particularly important matter to take up because the church in Ephesus was being disrupted by some men in leadership who were teaching wrong (false) things and leading people to live contrary to the way of Christ. Paul urged Timothy to stay in Ephesus specifically so he could deal with these false teachers. In chapter 5:17-25, which is our text for this sermon, Paul outlines how elders in the church are to be treated. He addresses how they are to be evaluated, compensated, protected, disciplined and appointed. What he writes is vital instruction and knowledge for any church that wants to be led well by qualified leaders. Let’s look at these verses together so that we might understand the Lord’s will regarding how a church is to relate to its elders.
