Jesus finishes the beatitudes and in Luke we see Luke add woes to the blessings which are simply the flipside of the blessings. Nevertheless, the beatitudes are nothing more than understanding there is more to life than just the here and now. The people who are blessed believe God, and hunger after being in His presence. The people who are in trouble are focused on the best here and now they can attain. With that as a backdrop Jesus tells the assembled "disciples", you are the salt of the earth and you are the light of the world. The truth is salt makes things taste better and light is essential to navigation, and believers are those essential ingredients. He then starts a section on understanding the importance of the Scripture, which was so perfectly written, he says, not even a yod (a vowel mark) is to be changed. Indeed, he says, He did not come to annul the Word, but to fully explain it.
