Our title today sums up the message of the Sermon on the Mount. Religious people think the problem is what we do. Jesus said, no the heart of the problem is a problem of the heart. As He begins to articulate His position He takes commonly known laws and shows it is not the act but what is behind the act that is the problem. Murder is awful but anger is what causes murder. Adultery is awful, but lust is what causes adultery. Divorce is awful, but self-centeredness is worse because it is the root cause of adultery. The same is true with making and breaking vows, retaliation and vengeance, even the way people give--the heart of the problem is a problem of the heart!
