The Levitical system ultimately failed. As glorious as it was, as God-given as it was, as useful as it was for many centuries, it ultimately failed. It could not take away sins and bring those who participated in it to heaven. Was this a failure on the part of God? After all, He gave it to Moses, He set it up. Is He tarred with the brush of disaster? The answer is no. The Levitical system worked well for its intended purpose — but it was never supposed to last forever, never supposed to perfect the worshippers. The category of "perfection" in the law is consistently applied to the sacrificial animals, not to the worshipers. As we approach the conclusion of the doctrinal part of Hebrews, and get close to the four and a half chapters of brilliant application, let's look today at the truth that the Levitical system cannot perfect those who worship God with it — and the corollary that no law-based approach to God can perfect those who worship Him.
