INTRO: You will not remember this, but for some ten years I have preached on the doctrine of the Church on Pentecost. You see, Jesus died, was buried and rose again. And then He lived on earth for 40 days to give ample proof that He had been raised from the dead. Luke says this in Acts 1:1-3, “The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.â€
Luke then tells us of how Jesus instructed His disciples. He writes, “And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, ‘which,’ He said, ‘you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.’"
Well, they did that, and waited. And when the ten days were completed, which is 40 plus 10 which is 50 and that is what Pentecost means, Pentecost had fully arrived. Pentecost was the fourth of the seven feasts of the Jews, which of course, is all significant. So look at what happened in Acts 2 on that day (read 2:1-4). |
