Theme: Sincere obedience comes through an honest understanding of the nature of God. In Lamentations, we see the results of Israel rebelling against God, and God's response to their sin was to remove Himself and destruction would follow. A thorough examination of the grief over the destruction of Jerusalem is given in this book; however, the author puts boundaries on his overwhelming grief for the glory of God. As judgment falls due to the people's sins, God's faithfulness is seen in that He fulfills His Word, that He will judge sin. However, He is merciful, and His mercies are new every morning. Lamentations is a record of what true repentance looks like. In application, our sin should cause us grief and mourning. With repentance, there is mercy. The repentance seen in Lamentations leads to belief in God because of His faithfulness. He will one day restore His people. In application, as believers, we need to consistently and honestly evaluate our hearts, repent, incline our hearts to God, and He will restore. He is faithful! |
