Theme: Following Jesus will cause division in relationships with other people. In vv. 49-50, we see Jesus' distress; He came to cast fire on the earth that will purify those who believe and bring judgment on those who do not. We need to ponder the surpassing work of Christ and His atonement for us. In vv. 51-53, we see the disciples' distress. Jesus asks them a question and gives them a shocking answer. He did not come to give peace on earth. Jesus explains the division that will occur between the world and those who follow Christ. We need to determine that following Christ is worth everything. When facing persecution or division because of Christ, remember these encouraging things: you are not alone (John 15:18); pursue Godliness , not conformity (2 Tim. 3:12); knowing Christ is greater than all wealth (Heb. 11:24-26); you'll be happy and glad one day (1 Peter 4:13); you'll be completely redeemed (1 Peter 5:10).
