Love relationships must be maintained in the context of the truth of God. Truth, as ministered by the indwelling Spirit to the believer, is to motivate this love.
There is to be a harmony that characterizes the relationships believers have with one another. This harmony has God's love rooted in God's truth as its foundation. John's concern in writing this epistle is that various issues relating to the false teaching coming from within this local church might cause division and conflict between its members.
He will emphasize that 'walking in the truth' which means living and acting in obedience to God's word will be the ongoing demonstration of love toward one another. This love is a selfless action that does what is best for someone else, not dependent on feelings and emotions or merely reacting to what the other person has done, or not done. Such is the love Christ demonstrated in the sacrifice of His life as payment for believer's sins and is to be the standard of measure for the love believers are then to show toward one another.
