Have you ever felt angry and depressed because life seems unfair. When this happens, with whom are you angry? Ultimately, if you don’t like the way the world is being run, you are angry with God. In our final chapter of Jonah, the prophet is angry with God because He spared the city of Nineveh after they repented. Jonah is so angry that he wants to die. The irony is that the man who was shown such mercy in chapter two did not want God to show mercy to his enemies. We can be modern day Jonahs. We are glad that God has shown grace to us, but we stand in judgment of those around us. Also, like Jonah, sometimes some of us can be tempted to think that things are so bad that life isn’t worth living.
The LORD is very patient as He counsels the pouting prophet by asking probing questions. Those who seek to counsel angry or depressed people can learn much from how God deals with Jonah.
