John 17 is Christ’s prayer to the Father before his death. Here, we are exposed to what goes on between the Father and the Son, and what they have in mind for the world. It is deeply personal and full of references to giving—so different to the narratives the world constructs to explain what is going on. In this first of two talks, we see that Jesus’ life has been and will be an outshining of his Father’s glory, and that this glory will be reflected in the apostles’ being one—one, that is, in the same way the Father and Son are one. Who else but the Father and Son could have such a vision of human unity!
