In this sermon I will continue our exposition of Isaiah's prophecy, but as I do it is important to note that we now begin the second major section of the book. From chapter 40-66 Isaiah addresses the people of God not only at the point of his ministry, but for the future period when they will be in exile as well. Having laid them low by the relentless announcement of coming judgment, his goal is now to comfort and encourage the remnant. In fact, it is God Himself who commands Isaiah to comfort His people. In this sermon we will see the nature of the comfort; the power of God to fulfill His will for His own; and the certainty that He will do so because of His great faithfulness. His word is sure, His promise is certain! Interestingly, Matthew picks up on a portion of our text and associates it with the ministry of John the Baptist. From there we see the cosmic scope of God's redemption. I close the sermon with an application about encouragement, and a reminder about world-wide redemption, and our need to be deeply involved in what God is doing. May the Lord be pleased to bless the preaching of His word for the good of our souls!
