Laban is one of the more unpleasant men in Genesis, a man who used his son-in-law as cheap labour and used his daughters to get what he wanted. In our section he is shown as the self-seeking man he was, an idolater who worshipped gods that could be stolen, that could do nothing, so unlike the true God, who works all things according the counsel of his own will. But we too are inclined to be like Laban, and need the same correction he did.
