The Prayer for Unity (20-23): That they may be one! Persons: The Church—those who believe thru their word (20) Petition: That they may be one just as you are in me (21a) Purpose: That the world may… Believe that the Father sent the Son (21c, 23) Know the Father loved them as He loved the Son (23) The Basis for Unity: Divine “Unions” Father is in the Son (21, 23a) Son is in the Father (21) Disciples are in the Father and the Son (21) Son is in the disciples (23a, 26c) The Means of Unity: Love Love of the Father for the Son (23, 24, 26) Love of the Father for the disciples (23b) Love of the Son for the disciples (24) The Growth of Unity: More knowledge of the Father Glory of Christ given to the disciples (22) Continued revelation of the Father by the Son (25-26) The Son made the Father's name known (26) He will continue to make it known (26) This will produce the love of the Father in us (26) Applications: We should rejoice that the Son continues to intercede for us (Hebrews 7:25) We must understand the “unions behind the unity” We must grow in our unity by studying God's word, seeing His increasing glory! We must revel in the cross, where God tore down the wall of separation between Jew and Gentile and made us one in Christ! Hallelujah!
