Matthew was a tax collector. He was a sinner. He systematically and regularly and in order to feed his own desires broke the law of God. He coveted. He lied. He stole. He was an outcast who found company in the presence of other tax collectors and those who fit in with them, i.e. prostitutes, robbers, murders, riff raff. And when men saw Matthew sitting at his custom booth along shores of the sea of Galilee what they saw was a sinner. They would have seen him and said, “There is a tax collector.” Like you may say, “There is a prostitute” or “there is a pornographer” or there is a “thief.” Yet what men see is not usually what God sees. We are told that our Lord 'saw the man Matthew.' And that is a good place to begin in our story of Jesus and Matthew. Today we consider not much about Matthew. Today we consider Jesus. 1st his unusual insight. 2nd his transforming power 3rd his calling 4th those he is called too/those he is attracted too
