Paul gives Timothy three metaphors for the Christian minister and also for all Christians. A soldier, and athlete and a farmer. No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of every day life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him. Christian ministers, and indeed all Christians, are soldiers who have been drafted into Christ's army. As soldiers, we are expected to fight our enemies spiritually, not flee, not retreat and not go AWOL. Timothy is shrinking back, and Paul reminds him that he is a soldier of Christ and has duties to fulfill. He is also like an athlete, who trains and disciplines his body for the sake of a reward. He is also like a farmer, who has to work hard in order to obtain a harvest. All these metaphors tell us something about the ministry and about the Christian life.
