To appreciate the privileges you currently enjoy, it is helpful to consider what you used to be. Every person who is a member of the church has such a history.
This radical change is part of the glory of Christ in building His church. Yet it is entirely possible for you to be a person who simply attends a local church, yet not be part of it. What is required is not simply "visitor" status, but "citizen" status. Some people won't go to a particular church because it is a church dominated by a certain ethnic group. Yet the church is a distinct people. It is this identity that should be seen dominating the church. Our relationship to the church is first, not secondary, to our national citizenship.
Not only does Scripture speak of the church in terms of citizenship, but calls it God's cherished family. Members of the church, remarkably, are not only family with God, we are family to each other too.
Family has the privilege of serving. The church is not a business. We don't come expecting customer service, as one would expect in a business, we come to serve one another.
As we look back to a time before these privileges became ours, it certainly increases our appreciation of what we have.
