God speaks to us in a variety of ways in His Word. Jonah is primarily a narrative/story but the text contains a Psalm (prayer poem) which Jonah wrote from the stomach of the great fish which had swallowed him.
God also teaches us in a variety of ways. Sometimes we can learn through reading His Word. Often He brings us to a clear understanding of His truth through various experiences, especially trials.
Through the trial of nearly drowning to death Jonah is brought back to the Lord. While undergoing his watery ordeal Jonah cries out in hope that God will be merciful. The Lord in His great mercy delivers Jonah who acknowledges that salvation is from the Lord and submits to God’s call on his life.
How is Jonah’s story our story? How has God used your suffering to humble you under His mighty hand. How has He mercifully delivered you? How is Jonah’s story Jesus’ story?
