We have reached an important junction in Colossians. Paul has been teaching the way he does normally. He always lays out the theology that is needed first and then gives a section of application. This is important even for us. We must have a correct foundation of belief before we can have correct actions. Paul has been careful to explain to the Colossians what they were missing. In looking to laws and man's philosophies they were getting their eyes off of Jesus. This wasn't a minor error, but a major failure. Christ was to have the preeminence in everything. Then he explains that we are complete in Him. We aren't lacking anything. In fact, we have all of the resources of God available to us in Christ. We have been circumcised in Him, raised with new life in Him, and freed from the requirements of the law in Him. Yet there is something that comes after this section that is very important. In the midst of Paul's warnings about not being deceived by false religious systems that place their emphasis on external religion, Paul points out that if you look at the external, you miss Christ. Colossians 2:19 shows that our nourishment is from Christ alone. If you miss this, you miss God. That is pretty important. Join us as we start this section of how should we now live.
