His first letter encouraged them to be faithful under pressure from persecution coming from outside the church. This letter was written to warn them of danger from within the church as false teachers infiltrated with false doctrine and corrupt lifestyles. He encouraged them to be faithful to the true knowledge they had heard and believed having been revealed by God to apostles and prophets whom He then sent out to teach as the foundation of the church. The life and growth of individual believers and the corporate church are dependent upon the true knowledge of the Word of God.
