He does not act like the Messiah. He does not meet the requirements of being the conquering Christ of God. He goes about healing, even raising the dead but there is no incontestable fulfilment of the prophesied day of God's wrath in destroying Israel's enemies and establishing in all the earth God's righteous reign. He has not even begun to make Jerusalem the universal centre for true worship where the nations come to be taught God's law but instead appears to flagrantly flout the law himself by eating and drinking with sinners! The Baptist is wrong to doubt, the enthusiastic crowds will not arrive at the truth, the Pharisees want a Messiah who will dance to their tune but Jesus quietly gets on with being the true Messiah in the Father's time and way. May we in our day serve Christ in the full assurance and peace of who He is and what He has done and what He will do without doubting no matter how we or He are misconstrued.
