No wonder the discples were enraged. This woman has a jar containing perhaps TWENTY THOUSAND POUNDS' worth of perfume...and she tips the whole lot on Jesus. Think about what that money could be used for!
So why did Jesus berate them? Simply this: they'd failed to grasp what this woman had. He came down to die, and anointing Jesus's hair and feet in this way symbolised the preparation for his burial. Also, she'd been saving this perfume for years all for this moment, and the value of her gift reflects the worth of the one she used it on.
One woman gave ger last pound to the work of God. One gave her "life savings". Jesus commended both women. It shows us that no gift is too small to be worthless in God's sight and no gift is so big as to be extravagant.
Significantly, the extravangance of this preserving ointment would signify the absence of decomposition of Jesus Christ in the grave. He wasn't there to stay!
