Key to understanding the history of Israel is remembering God chose Israel to belong to Him. As His people they had to be a holy people, because He is holy. Being holy as His people required they be obedient to Him manifesting His holy character. This proved to be an ongoing struggle for the people both in their personal lives and in their worship as they mixed it with the gods of other nations.
In this chapter Amaziah listens to God in one situation and experiences a victory over the Edomites, but follows that up with unfaithfulness as he worships the pagan gods of the very people he had defeated! Judgment will be forthcoming costing him his life.
As the nation experienced propsperity it only led to greater corruption as they compromised their living as holy people to the Lord.
Lessons to be learned from this study include: 1. Unbiblical compromise prepares the way for greater corruption. 2. Each person is responsible for their own sin. 3. Unbiblical alliances require caution in accomplishing God's work. 4. Great victories are sometimes followed by great defeats. 5. Be open to rebuke from God. 6. Many begin well but few finish well.
