The thoughts are so connected from chapter to chapter that to miss the context is to miss the very truths that are being conveyed. Too often we might go to some spiritual application and think it is the primary thought. Here, not Jesus calls upon the 'masses' to be His disciples. This has already been taught to the disciples earlier. Now, in view of national Israel's failing to discern the time in which they lived, time for national Israel's time for repentance past, their house being left desolate, Christ intimate that the days are coming, if they would be His disciples, that they must forsake even their kinsmen and follow Christ. This impresses upon our minds Christ preparing some of these for the day when they must forsake all that they have ever known and go into the nations and preach Christ. Praise God we know that they did this very thing. We Gentiles which have trusted in Christ are a fruit of their faithfulness. This is really the gist of the remaining portion of Luke chapter 14.
