Stephen Atkinson, of Christian Witness to Israel, brings the message this morning. Peter told his Jewish hearers that they had crucified Christ by the hands of godless men and that they needed to repent. The message is still the same today, for both Jews and Gentiles. Sinners need to be convicted of their sins, not flattered. Peter says, "Save yourselves (KJV, ESV) from this perverse generation." The NAS translates it "Be saved from this perverse generation." Regardless of which translation has best rendered the verb tense (which is either passive or middle voice and are identical in ending), Peter is, of course, not hear teaching self salvation or salvation by works. His words are the equivalent to "Repent." No sinner has the ability to repent or to save himself. Even so, these commands are given to sinners in the imperative mood, because of the urgency of the response required. When sinners hear that they must repent and "save themselves" it is not a denial that salvation is "of the Lord" or that salvation is by grace. It is an exhortation to cast ourselves on the mercy of God in Christ.
