Context of qualifications for church leaders (elders and deacons) is within a local church. It follows that not being connected to a local church body is wrong. * How can you obey leaders unless there is a local body of gathered believers (Hebrews 13:17) * Bible assumes a list of those in fellowship exists (1 Timothy 5:9) * Paul says he is writing to say how church should function (v.15) - must assume a local gathering - wouldn't make sense if talking about universal, unorganized body. * Bible talks about believers gathering in order to serve one another
WHAT IS A PASTOR? * elder - experienced in ruling * overseer/bishop - guardian or oversight * pastor - shepherd, guide/tend to members * steward - manages with trustworthiness * these are not different types of elders - each elder is all of these, but excel in different areas. i.e. some may be more of a bishop than an elder, but they are still an elder. * Should train up others elders from local body (2 Timothy 2:2). Acts 6 - Deacons selected from within local church * Main job is shepherding - guiding sheep to heaven
WHAT IS A DEACON? * Servant * Basically same as elder except not apt to teach
QUALIFICATIONS? * Won't meet with zero sin. * Simply above reproach: - good reputation - faithful - heart for Jesus and church - not addicted to worldly things
CONCLUSION: love and be involved in your local church; be thankful to God for His provision of pastors and deacons; and serve one another in the church.
