Psalm 22 invokes powerful imagery of human beings being savaged by wild beasts (verses 12, 13 and 21). This is a graphic appeal to the reader's mind to grasp something of the barbarity of the cross and the horrors of Jesus' sin-bearing death. This sermon includes this animal theme by describing something of the horrors of the almost-worldwide, historic practise of administering justice by means of elephants. In the same way that death by dismemberment and crushing by an elephant is terrifying, the death of Jesus was terrifying, but to a greater degree. May God use these photographs of the cross to draw you to Jesus.
