How is Timothy to prevent being despised for his youth? By being an example in word and deed -- in love, faith and purity. Additionally, Paul tells him not to neglect the spiritual gift within him. Most likely this was the gift of preaching and teaching, which Timothy was tempted to neglect out of fear of persecution.
