What these chapters depict is a final onslaught by a fearsome coalition of forces, coming from many nations, led by a mysterious figure called Gog of the land of Magog, against a defenceless Israel that had been resettled in the land. The size of this force is so terrifying that it would appear Israel has no hope. When all seems well for Israel, after all her judgement and suffering, it seems that all hell is about to break open upon her. But in reality these forces are actually under the hand of God and their evil scheme to plunder and loot Israel will completely backfire as God Himself delivers Israel and utterly destroys her enemies. In this way God will show His greatness and holiness so that many nations will know that He is the Lord.
It is clear from these chapters that the final attempt of evil powers to destroy Israel results in the full and final revelation of God’s glory and the acknowledgement of the nations and Israel of His true identity and the vindication of His holiness and justice. No matter how intense the conflict or how intimidating the power of this world’s evil, we can be assured that the God who overcame the world in the cross, disarming evil powers and making a public spectacle of them, will one day universally and publicly reveal the greatness and holiness of all that He is and all that He has done in establishing His Kingdom forever.
