All things work together for good for those who love God and who are called according to His purpose. Obviously, this doesn't mean everyone in the world, since many are not called and most do not love God. When we universalize the promises of God to His elect and broaden them to include goats, we strip the substance of those promises of any value or meaning. What comfort can we derive from Romans 8:28 if the same promise applies to billions now burning in hell. If we universalize the intent of the promise, we do the same thing. If God meant for all things to work for good to those who love Him, and yet most people end up in hell, regardless, then how can those same promises mean anything for me? How do I know they will be fulfilled for me? The doctrine of election is a safeguard from the destruction of universalism. It helps us know that God is sovereignly working out every event, controlling every force, every demon, and every person in such a way that no matter what harm they do, we will ultimately gain from it and become more conformed to the image of Christ. What a glorious promise!
