The Gospel According To John April 29, 2012 Sermon Lesson 78 John 16:12-15
The Work of the Holy Spirit in Believers
We must rejoice at the work of the Holy Spirit in believers (12-15) He guides them in (into) all the truth (12-13) Things they could not bear to hear at that time (12) Will not speak on His own authority (13a) Whatever He hears He will speak (13b) He will declare the things that are to come (13c) He glorifies Jesus Christ to them (14-15) (a Christocentric work) The Spirit takes what is Christ's and declares it to them (14b) All that the Father has is Christ's (15a) The Spirit takes what is Christ's and declares it to them (15b) Excursus: Distinctions between the apostles and us Applications We must rejoice at the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives today! We must depend upon the Holy Spirit to teach us what the Scriptures are saying. Don't chase after the “historical Jesus”…find Him in all that Scriptures teach! Rely upon the Holy Spirit for wisdom for every possible counseling situation. Follow the Holy Spirit's cues to glorify Christ in all that we do! Paraclete Passages: John 14:15-17; 14:15-26; 15:26-27; 16:7-15
